Nearing Month 6….Our Last Week in Zurich
We can’t believe it – six months in Zurich has absolutely flown by! Over the last couple of weeks we’ve been getting things in order to move back to Kansas City…packing, de-registering from Switzerland, selling Roland’s bicycle, taking Zoey to the vet for her ‘okay to fly’ check-up, closing our Swiss bank account and having some great going away parties and dinners with our friends. We’ve been asked a lot of questions lately about our favorite moments in Europe and what we’re most looking forward to when we go back home. There are really so many things to choose from, but below is the best summary we’ve got of our memories and what we can’t wait to get home to. See you soon!! Ciao!
What We’ll Miss the Most
- Living near the Old Town area of Zurich, just two blocks from the lake and a great view of the Alps.
- The amazing public transportation…trams, trains, buses, boats – you name it, we rode it!
- Having such a great group of lads to play football (soccer) with and not being harassed for wanting to watch the greatest sport ever on television at a pub.
- Our new found friends from the US who were also living in Zurich as international assignees…Kyle and Crystal (Swiss Re), Megan and Shawn (Google), Keith and Flo (Swiss Re), and Alison and Phil (KPMG). We are going to miss you and hope we can connect when everyone is back in the states!
- Getting to know my Zurich colleagues even more and working with such a great team. And the gourmet coffee, food and desserts served in Swiss Re’s cafeteria…yum.
- Being centrally located in Europe and having our travel options wide open!
- Spending so much time with Zoey and getting to walk and go on hikes with her every day.
- The best cheese, bread and chocolates on the planet.
Most Memorable
- The Street Parade in Zurich was insane, as was being in Zurich during the EuroCup Tournament.
- Getting to share our experience here in Zurich with Sharon and Janie, who both made the long journey over here.
- Santorini, Greece was paradise for me, and Roland loved New Castle, England. Experiencing Oktoberfest in Munich, seeing the Eiffel Tower in Paris and riding in a gondola down a canal in Venice were also pretty darn amazing.
What We Can’t Wait to Get Home To
- Being with our moms, dads, extended family and friends over the holidays and getting to see Roland’s step-father Steve who is finally home from Iraq.
- Attending all of the upcoming weddings and meeting all of the new babies (or those that are close to being here), as well as seeing the little ones that have grown over the last 6 months!
- Our home…our yard…and much more personal living space.
- Not having to ask “sprechen sie English?” everytime we have a question while out in the city, and feeling bad we didn’t have more time to learn Swiss German.
- Being able to actually read food labels in the grocery store, menus at restaurants and traffic signs. Along with having access to more American TV…we’ve had enough of our two English channels (CNN and MTV) to last us a lifetime.
- Mexican food…Chipotle, cheese dip, and smothered burritos!
- And Roland’s looking forward to finding those 15 pounds he lost over here during the upcoming holiday season. :)
